NAITA President's Letter

International trade is vital to the economic and cultural growth and well-being of the North Alabama community. This rich heritage began with the arrival of German scientists in the 1950’s and has grown and flourished to the present in both the commercial and governmental sectors. North Alabama is home to businesses, large and small, that export and/or import around the world; it has a large number of multinational corporations; it is home to the U.S. Army’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) efforts; and few areas can match the region’s social and cultural diversity.

In the early 1980s, regional business leaders saw the need for an organization that would help businesses grow internationally. More than 25 years later, the North Alabama International Trade Association is going strong with approximately 500 individual members. NAITA promotes economic growth through international trade education, training, and networking. It complements, encourages, and supports on-going business activities and is the “one stop shop” providing resources for regional international trade development. NAITA is unique in the area and in the country; it is a business-driven, non-profit organization committed to increasing knowledge, interest, and activity in international trade.

This year, NAITA continues building on past successes in the areas of relevance, organization, membership, and programs and services.

Realizing that all of the Army’s Foreign Military Sales efforts now flow through Redstone Arsenal, and acknowledging the large number of corporations supporting these and other international activities, NAITA has for several years provided outreach to the North Alabama aerospace and defense community. In addition to cooperation and communication with other professional associations, NAITA has hosted relevant speakers and seminars addressing FMS, export controls, and international skills and issues, with increasing participation in NAITA’s Export Controls & Compliance Roundtable.

Organizationally, the articles of incorporation have been updated and the bylaws changed to reflect IRS directives, as well as a reorganized Board of Directors and committee structure. A number of committees have been condensed into three to streamline functioning:  Development, Programs & Services, and Global Initiatives. In addition, a Senior Advisory Council of community leaders has been established to assist the President and Board in strategic planning and issue relevance.

NAITA has embarked on an aggressive sponsorship program to attract and retain new members. In addition to activities outlined above, the organization has exhibited at major symposia and seminars and actively publicized its events and services to the North Alabama international community.

NAITA’s greatest strength has always been its ability to provide relevant programs, meaningful services, and networking and growth opportunities for its members. These activities have continued to grow with such events as the Annual Meeting, World Trade Day, Trade Education Tours across North Alabama, ITAR, EAR, and import/export training, and our Annual Holiday Party. The organization also works closely with the leadership of local, state, and federal government to support international programs.

If you or your organization are involved in international trade – or, if you want to be – NAITA is the pivotal organization that provides the support to get you started or help you grow. Use this well-connected regional resource to facilitate your move or expansion in the global marketplace.
