HUNTSVILLE, Ala., May 4, 2006 – The Port of Huntsville (POH) has been selected by the North Alabama International Trade Association (NAITA) to receive its prestigious Global Trade Award for 2006. The annual NAITA Global Trade Award honors North Alabama organizations and companies for dedication to international trade development. The Port of Huntsville was selected for its community leadership and excellence in expanding international business by establishing the infrastructure critical to the global success of companies across the region. The Port of Huntsville is also recognized as a leader in cooperating with other organizations across North Alabama in supporting all aspects of international trade development. In the past year, the Port of Huntsville has been instrumental in working with NAITA to launch a new economic development initiative, The North Alabama Region: a Globally Competitive Community (GC2) – a catalyst to build a sustainable globally competitive region. Rick Tucker, Executive Director of the Port of Huntsville, accepted the Global Trade Award – a custom-designed, commemorative stone plaque – today during ceremonies at NAITA’s 23rd annual World Trade Day Luncheon at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Huntsville. It was presented by last year’s honoree, Teledyne Brown Engineering, represented by John Latimer, Director of Int'l Business Development. Infrastructure Development and trade development work hand in hand in connecting communities and companies to the world. “The future economic prosperity of our region is dependent upon our commitment to continue developing transportation systems which will allow commerce and industry to successfully compete in the global marketplace,” said Rick Tucker. About the Port of Huntsville The Port of Huntsville is an inland port of entry that is comprised of three main operating entities, Huntsville International Airport, the International Intermodal Center, and the Jetplex Industrial Park. The Port of Huntsville’s International Intermodal Center (IIC) provides air, rail, and ground transportation resources for its customers. Over 90% of the goods shipped through the IIC’s cargo operations are of an international origin or destination. Jetplex Industrial Park is home to more than 60 companies representing the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan and Korea. These companies include - The Boeing Company, Siemens VDO, LG Electronics, Raytheon, and International Diesel of Alabama. LG Electronics, formerly TheGoldStar Company, was the first Korean company to build in the U.S. The GoldStar Companybegan construction in 1981 and as LG Electronics is still operating in the park 25 years later. The Jetplex is also home to Foreign-Trade Zone No. 83, making it an attractive location for companies involved in international trade. The recently expanded 12,600-foot runway at Huntsville International Airport can accommodate a fully loaded 747-400 with cargo and fuel on a hot summer day.
